The balance measures more than the object

A balance reading is affected by the instrument, the support, air movement, temperature, static, vibration, and how the sample or container is handled. Sartorius operating instructions emphasize allowing samples to equilibrate to the balance environment and minimizing convection around a container. A draft shield can help, but it cannot repair a wet bench, an unstable installation, or a container warmed by your hand. Begin by reading the exact manual for the model in front of you; display resolution is not the same as measurement accuracy.

Tare is a bookkeeping operation that sets the displayed container mass to zero. It does not erase the physical container mass or prove the zero is correct. For traceability, record the empty-container reading if your method permits, then the gross reading, and calculate net mass as gross minus tare. If the balance prints or stores a result, preserve that record with the balance ID and time.

Water-only practice

Use a clean, dry container and a small amount of room-temperature water. Do not weigh unknown powders, volatile chemicals, or biological material in this lesson. Water can evaporate and the container can develop droplets, so the exercise teaches observation and records rather than a universal density or accuracy claim. Close the draft shield, wait for stability, and avoid leaning on the bench while the value settles.

  • Never place a wet container directly on a balance pan unless the manual and local procedure allow it.
  • Use forceps or a clean outside surface for a small container when hand warmth could matter.
  • Do not adjust or calibrate with a weight unless authorized and instructed for that balance model.

Worked example

Separating a calculation from a claim

The empty container reads 18.432 g and the gross container with water reads 28.917 g. Net mass is 28.917 g − 18.432 g = 10.485 g.

Safety & stop conditions

Pause if the work no longer fits the plan.

  • Keep liquids contained and protect the balance from spills; stop immediately if liquid reaches the pan or housing.
  • Use only water and clean containers for this practice. Follow local electrical and spill procedures.
  • Do not improvise calibration weights or place objects beyond the balance capacity.

Method

Work through the steps.

  1. 01

    Inspect the setup

    Confirm the balance ID, level or status indicator, clean pan, stable bench, and manual-specified warm-up or environmental conditions. Record anything unusual.

  2. 02

    Stabilize the container

    Use a dry container at room conditions and handle it by a clean outside surface. Let the display settle before recording the empty mass.

  3. 03

    Tare or record tare

    If using tare, place the empty container, close the shield, wait for stability, and press tare according to the manual. Where possible, retain the pre-tare value too.

  4. 04

    Add water and read

    Add water without touching the pan or splashing. Close the shield, wait for the stability indicator, and record the net reading, units, timestamp, and any drift.

  5. 05

    Check and clean

    Remove the container, inspect for droplets, and leave the pan clean and dry. If the zero does not return as expected, stop and investigate rather than forcing a correction.

Common mistakes

Correct the process, preserve the record.

The operator touches the container and immediately records a value.

Wait for the balance and container to equilibrate; document the handling condition and repeat only under the defined method.

A reading is copied with no unit or balance ID.

Treat it as incomplete raw data and recover the metadata before using the value.

The display drifts while the shield is open.

Close the shield, remove drafts and vibration, and investigate temperature or evaporation before deciding whether to repeat.

The operator interprets many displayed digits as guaranteed precision.

Use the model specification and verification evidence; resolution alone cannot establish uncertainty.

Practice

Gross, tare, and net record

If a suitable balance is available under its approved instructions, weigh one dry container and then the same container with water; repeat after removing and replacing it. Without equipment, use a tare of 18.432 g and gross readings of 28.917 g and 28.919 g after replacing the same container. Calculate the two net readings and audit the calculation trail. These are invented practice values, and the two readings are not independent samples of water.

  1. Did the two container readings agree within the method’s stated rule?
  2. What environmental feature could have influenced drift?
  3. Which number is raw and which is calculated?
  4. What would make you stop rather than repeat?
