Organization is part of the method

A bench layout affects the probability of swapping samples, touching clean items with contaminated gloves, or recording the wrong identity. Before work, place only the materials needed for the current step. Use a one-way flow when possible: clean supplies to preparation, samples to measurement, and waste to a clearly identified route. Keep labels facing the operator and leave a deliberate area for records so notebooks do not become contaminated or hidden under equipment.

Contamination has a source, a route, and a receiving item. The source may be a dirty container, splash, glove, pipette, dust, or shared tool. The route may be contact, aerosol, drip, or misidentified transfer. Controls can include dedicated tools, sequencing from clean to less clean, changing gloves, covered containers, cleaning validated for the material, and blanks that travel through the method. Do not claim a surface is sterile or clean beyond the method and evidence supporting that claim.

  • Zone 1: clean supplies and unused containers.
  • Zone 2: active sample handling and measurements.
  • Zone 3: labeled waste or items awaiting decontamination or disposal.
  • Records: protected, legible, and linked to sample IDs and method version.

Plan waste before starting

Waste is a material with a classification and an owner, not an afterthought. Identify the liquid or solid, contamination status, container compatibility, labeling, closure, storage location, pickup route, and response for a leak. A water-only exercise can use a sink only when the site permits that disposal; unknown or hazardous material needs its approved route. Never pour an unknown substance into a drain to make the bench look finished.

  • Keep waste containers closed when not adding material.
  • Do not mix streams unless the procedure explicitly allows it and compatibility is established.
  • Treat contaminated disposables and clean recyclables as separate streams.
  • Record unusual waste, spills, or deviations with date, identity, and action.

Worked example

A traceable water bench

The learner transfers water between three labeled cups and records volume readings.

  1. 01Clean zone: capped source bottle, unused cups, clean transfer tool.
  2. 02Active zone: one cup at a time with ID W-01, W-02, W-03; notebook placed outside splash path.
  3. 03Waste zone: labeled water-only waste cup, used wipes, and damaged disposables kept separate.
  4. 04Closeout: reconcile IDs, readings, remaining water, waste disposition, and any spill or label check.

    Draw the flow

    Mark clean supplies, active samples, records, and waste. Put the most contamination-sensitive items upstream.

    Stage and label

    Place only needed items; verify every container identity, status, and destination before opening or moving it.

    Close and reconcile

    At the end, account for samples, waste, tools, and records; document spills, missing labels, or deviations.

Common mistakes

Correct the process, preserve the record.

Putting clean caps or pipettes beside open waste.

Separate zones and close waste containers; replace any item whose status is uncertain.

Cleaning by habit without checking compatibility.

Use the approved procedure for the material and surface; document it when it affects the method.

Treating an unlabeled container as water because it is on the water bench.

Stop and resolve identity through the site's procedure; location is not identification.

Practice

Redesign a crowded bench

Draw a bench with clean bottles and used wipes on the left, two open sample cups in the center, a notebook in the splash zone, and an unlabeled container beside them. Redraw this deliberately flawed layout for water-only practice and write a waste route.

01Why separate clean and active zones?

Answer: It reduces contact and mix-up routes and gives the operator a visible place to return unused materials. The layout supports the method's contamination controls.

02Can a water-only exercise always use a sink?

Answer: Only when local rules and the activity permit it. Unknown, contaminated, or hazardous material requires its approved waste route.

03What should happen when a sample label falls off?

Answer: Pause and preserve the state. Do not guess identity; follow the site's identification or quarantine process, document the event, and obtain qualified direction.
