Turn a broad curiosity into an operational question with a defined unit, population, comparison, and boundary.
Objective
Broad questions invite broad claims. “Which container is best?” hides the property, use, and decision. A measurable version could ask: “At room temperature, which of two named containers gives the smaller spread in repeated water-volume readings under the stated reading method?” The revised question identifies the comparison, outcome, context, and purpose without promising accuracy that has not been established.
Define the experimental unit: the smallest independently assigned item or trial to which a condition applies. Define the measured outcome and its unit. Define how you will classify or calculate it, including timing, instrument, and rounding. If “clean” means no visible residue, say so; if it means a blank result below a method limit, say that instead. Operational definitions make disagreement visible and let another person repeat the decision.
A limitation is part of the question's honesty, not an apology added after a result. Write the intended use, the assumptions, and the contexts excluded. Decide what would count as a meaningful difference before seeing results when possible; the threshold must have a scientific or decision basis, not a convenient number. If no reference is available, you can compare repeatability while avoiding a claim of accuracy.

The learner has two vessels and a reference volume but cannot establish traceability of the reference. The question is narrowed to repeatability.
