Repeating is a design decision

A repeat can mean reproducing the same setup to check consistency, replicating with new independent units, or deliberately changing one condition to test a limitation. These goals are different. If the first run compared two water-volume methods without a suitable reference, the next run might add a reference measurement, randomize the order, control temperature, or use a second operator. Simply collecting more readings from the same setup may improve a mean estimate while leaving bias untouched.

The capstone keeps the practical scope bounded: room-temperature water-volume comparison, with a supplied-data route for anyone without suitable equipment. Weighing-based reference measurements are optional and require explicit density and balance assumptions. Without a suitable reference, the learner may discuss repeatability and method difference, but not accuracy. No result is a pass because it is positive or plausible; the record is judged by traceability, reasoning, and honest limits.

A complete repeat package

Carry forward the question, prediction, risk and measurement plan, dated notebook, raw table, calculation trail, graph, conclusion, limitations, and proposed repeat. Version the method and mark every change. Decide in advance which outcome matters and how a control or reference affects interpretation. When the second run disagrees, preserve both records and investigate conditions rather than choosing the more convenient result. A better question usually emerges from a specific unresolved uncertainty: ‘Does order affect the difference?’ is more actionable than ‘Why were results strange?’

Worked example

From limitation to next question

First run: Method B readings were higher than Method A, but only one operator and no reference were used. Proposed repeat: alternate method order and use a documented reference volume if available.

    Select consistency, independent replication, reference comparison, condition test, or another defined aim.

    Specify units, order, controls, raw-data fields, acceptance or interpretation rule, and what would trigger investigation.

    Run or use supplied data

    Keep the same records and identify every changed feature. Do not discard inconvenient observations.

    Compare and improve

    Report both runs, explain disagreement or agreement, state the remaining limit, and write the next measurable question.

Common mistakes

More readings are assumed to fix systematic bias.

The next question is broad and unmeasurable.

Name the variable, outcome, comparison, and condition that would answer it.
