RAMP is a decision process

Safety begins with the actual task, quantity, equipment, environment, and people involved. Recognize hazards by identifying chemical, physical, biological, electrical, pressure, heat, and waste hazards for each step. Assess risk by considering who could be exposed, how exposure could occur, likelihood, severity, and what changes the risk. A label or SDS is an input, not a substitute for understanding the whole operation.

Minimize risk using the strongest practical controls first: eliminate or substitute the hazard, contain or engineer the process, establish clear procedures and training, then select PPE that is compatible with the hazard and task. Prepare for emergencies by checking controls, spill or exposure response, communication, exits, and who has authority to stop the work. A beginner should pause and obtain qualified help when the task, hazard, or response capability is outside the reviewed plan.

The design habits from the earlier controls lesson belong in the readiness decision too: identify what condition is being compared, keep relevant conditions controlled, use a blank or other check when contamination could change the result, and name the independent unit for any later measurement. If a confounder such as operator, order, location, or time could affect exposure or measurement, write the sequence and controls before starting rather than improvising them at the bench.

  • Assess: connect likelihood and severity to quantities, energy, duration, and context.
  • Minimize: choose substitution, containment, engineering, administrative controls, and PPE.
  • Prepare: verify emergency resources, waste route, communication, and stop authority.

Write a usable stop rule

A stop condition is observable and paired with an action. “Stop if the setup is unsafe” is too vague. “Stop before opening if the container is unlabeled, leaking, or lacks a reviewed SDS; isolate it and contact the responsible supervisor” is actionable. Include conditions for loss of ventilation or containment, unexpected heat or pressure, exposure, spill beyond the planned response, wrong identity, damaged PPE, and any deviation you cannot assess. Stop rules protect data quality as well as people: an unplanned condition can invalidate the method.

  • Do not improvise neutralization, cleanup, or disposal from memory.
  • Keep the SDS accessible in the work area or approved system and use the supplier's current revision.
  • PPE is selected for the hazard and task; gloves are not universal chemical protection.
  • Water-only practice can teach the worksheet without creating a new hazard.

Worked example

Specific stop conditions

A reviewed water-only exercise uses a plastic transfer vessel and a sink. The plan still addresses identity, slips, contamination, and record integrity.

  1. 01Recognize: spill and slip hazard; unknown identity if a bottle is unlabeled; contamination risk for the sample.
  2. 02Minimize: use labeled containers, small volumes, clear bench space, and a stable surface; keep the sink accessible.
  3. 03Stop: stop if a vessel cracks, a label is missing, water spills beyond the planned cleanup, or the sample identity is uncertain.
  4. 04Prepare: secure the area, follow site spill procedure, notify the responsible person, and document the deviation before resuming.

    Define the task

    Write material identity and quantity, equipment, location, temperature or energy, duration, people, and waste route.

  2. 02

    Complete RAMP

    For each step, identify hazard, exposure path, control, PPE, expected condition, and response. Consult the SDS sections relevant to hazards, handling, storage, and first aid.

  3. 03

    Set stop conditions

    Write observable triggers and the next action: stop, secure, notify, evacuate, or obtain qualified review as the site procedure requires.

Common mistakes

Relying on PPE as the only control.

Consider substitution and containment first; choose PPE only after identifying the hazard and compatibility.

Using an old or wrong SDS.

Verify product identity, supplier, revision, and accessibility before work.

Writing “ask for help” without naming the trigger.

Define the observable condition and the responsible contact or escalation route.

RAMP a water-only transfer

Complete a low-hazard worksheet for transferring room-temperature water between labeled containers. Then add a deliberate mismatch: an unlabeled bottle appears at the bench.

Answer: Assess the risks of recognized hazards in the context of this task, considering exposure route, likelihood, severity, quantities, and controls.

02Why is “wear gloves” not a complete safety plan?

Answer: Gloves may be incompatible or insufficient, and they do not control the source, containment, ventilation, waste, or emergency response. Controls must match the specific hazard and activity.

03A container has the expected color but no label. Is that enough to continue?

Answer: No. Appearance does not establish identity. Stop, isolate or secure it under the site procedure, and obtain qualified identification before use or disposal.
